Mechagodzilla was planned to appear in Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle. While Mechagodzillla did appear in the final film abet as an City, earlier plans was gonna have Mechagodzilla City become an massive robot to fight Godzilla before Toho's intervention canned that idea.

It was mentioned that an early version of the film meant to have Mechagodzilla City would become an Giant Robot version of the original Mechagodzilla now matching in size with Godzilla Earth but Toho flat out Vetoed this idea and was scrapped.

- Toho’s intervention is likely why Mechagodzilla didn't fight Godzilla physically as it was orginally planned for Mechagodzilla City to become an giant robot to fight Godzilla, making it one of the few instances their interventions was an bad choice that turned for the worse. Had Toho allowed this idea, it would've been more likely Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle would’ve been more well received since an potential fight would’ve been well payed off in the end since many fans were hyped to see an fight between Godzilla and Mechagodzilla.
