“ | Now... where was I? Actually, I have a better question... who was I? I mean way back when, before the spider bite, before the genetic transmutation and so on. By the way, if you're coming in late, could you maybe ask a friend to catch you up or something? Because my life is complicated. There's a funny thing I've noticed about growing up. You sorta end up who you were. My problem is I don't remember much about who I was. Where I came from. Who I came from. Who. I. Am. | „ |
~ Peter Parker's narration at the beginning of the script. |
Peter Parker, better known as Spider-Man, is the titular main protagonist of Amazing Spider-Man, a film script for what would later become Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2.
He was a high school student who was bitten by a genetically altered "super" spider while on a school field trip. Endowed with the proportionate powers and abilities of a spider and following his uncle's tragic death, he intended to use his abilities for good; thus, becoming the crime-fighting superhero known to the public, Spider-Man. Two years after the death of Green Goblin, he would be given a letter from his parents by Aunt May, leading him to finding the shocking truth about his parents and their deaths.
In the first film or the trilogy, he was portrayed by Tobey Maguire, who was set to play this version of the character before the script was reworked into the finished product.
Biography[]
On his twenty-first birthday, Peter Parker spent time with his aunt and Mary Jane Watson, the latter revealing that she supposedly had made a new male friend, Jeff (who she in fact made up), with Parker growing jealous at the news. He also met Harry Osborn, now head of Oscorp, who gave him a new Leica camera as a present, and learned that he still resented Spider-Man for supposedly killing his father. When Harry asked Peter if he knew Spider-Man's identity, he denied it, and his friend agreed to believe him.
The next day, May gave Peter a letter from his deceased parents. This letter revealed that Richard and Mary were actually scientists in the field of neogenics working on a device that could be very destructive in the wrong hands, so they removed the most important part of it, the image refractor, and placed it in a bank vault, and with their passing, it was up to Peter to come into possession of it at the age of 21 and make the right choice. Having taken the refractor, Peter changed into his Spider-Man costume and swinged towards the Empire State Building, where he hid the refractor inside the skyscraper's flagpole. Parker then arrived at his university, where he learned from Curt Connors about Otto Octavius, a neogenics researcher. At the Daily Bugle, Peter learned that Harry had put up a bounty on Spider-Man, promising a fortune to whoever unmasks him. Peter then headed off to Otto's.
Otto reacted with shock to Parker's arrival before embracing him in a fit of tears. The scientist revealed that he was part of Richard and Mary's research team, and that rather than dying in a plane crash, Peter's parents were murdered by a Soviet double agent "Black Hand". Since then, Octavius sought to complete his colleagues' work and have it serve a good purpose. Bying his claims, Parker agreed to help Otto complete the device. He left, and returned with the image refractor, which he handed over to Octavius, only to realize the scientist was about to shoot him. Peter doged the shot, and learned from Otto that his parents were actually murdered by Otto himself because of their concerns about the project's danger. Escaping the villain, Peter jumped out of the lab's window and onto the rail tracks. He avoided being run over by a train by jumping on its roof, but Otto mistakenly believed his victims' son to have died as well.
Peter changed into his Spider-Man suit and broke into Otto's lab. A fight ensued, during which Spider-Man suddenly realized that his powers began to vanish. Eventually, the lab went down in flames, and the superhero escaped, leaving Otto behind - not to die, but to turn into something more hedious than he already was.
The next day, Peter learned from Connors that the genetically engineered spiders, one of which Peter got his powers from, had gone through the same power inconsistency as him until they vanished completely, with no clear reason. In the meantime, Peter started to develop a close relationship with a fellow student, Gwen Stacy, even going on a date with her. The next day, he learned that Otto Octavius had merged with his tentacle arms and escaped the hospital, and later, as Spider-Man, he stopped a carjacker from assaulting a couple, but had to flee the scene when the police captain George, Gwen Stacy's father, arrived. It turned out that the carjacker had assaulted an undercover cop, who was meant to help uncover the car robbers' ring, and Spider-Man had inadvertently foiled the operation. George also realized that Peter was Spider-Man while the latter was visiting his family, but didn't let it out.
When Octavius, now dubbed "Dr. Octopus", made his first attack on the city, Spider-Man leaped in into action. As Captain Stacy was mortally wounded protecting a child from the villain, the superhero tried to get him to a hospital before it was too late, but failed to save him. This led to Spider-Man being accused of murder by The Daily Bugle, much to Peter's protest, and denounced by the people of New York. After his attempt to help a (supposedly) assaulted woman ruined a play rehearsal, he was ultimately convinced that people didn't need him anymore, and destroyed his suit. What he didn't realize, however, was that Harry had spied on him and learned his identity.
At another date, Peter learned that Harry was getting married to Stephanie. At the wedding, Peter met Dr. Connors once again, who revealed that the genetically modified spiders lost their powers due to a change in diet, and as little as a bit of milk could have saved them. The wedding was attacked by Dr. Octopus, who was after the image refractor that Harry had switched for a fake. In the chaos, Peter restored his powers with a glass of milk, found a replacement for his Spider-suit in a costume shop, and came back to protect the visitors from the villain. He chased Dr. Octopus across the city and prevented him from handing over the image refractor to a foreign agent. As the battle devolved into a tug-o-war between Dr. Octopus, two helicopters and Spider-Man, the latter manages to convert an air conditioner into an electro magnet, separating Octavius from his tentacles. Spider-Man took the image refractor and left the villain to be arrested. After the battle, Peter reconciled to a degree with both M.J. and Gwen Stacy.
At the end of the film, Spider-Man placed the refractor back where it belonged, before accepting his life of a superhero and swinging away to wherever he might be needed next.
