Willy the Wombat was set to be the main protagonist of the titular video game that would become Crash Bandicoot. He is a mutated wombat who was created to be the leader of Dr. Neo Cortex's mutant army, but was rejected for being deemed defective, and turned against his creators to rescue his love interest Tawna.

Past[]
Before being evolved, Willy was a common wombat living on an island off the Austrialian coast. Eventually, he was captured and mutated by Neo Cortex and Nitrus Brio. In captivity, he met another wombat under the name of Tawna and fell in love with her.
Willy the Wombat[]
Eventually, Cortex decided to make Willy the leader of his Cortex Commandos, and sent him into the Cortex Vortex to give him the proper intelligence and personality via brainwashing. Upon exit, however, Willy had gained a zany personality and spoke in nothing but movie references. Disappointed, Cortex ejected Crash from the castle into the ocean, and chose Tawna as his next subject. Willy washed up on the coast of South Sanity Island, and, despite being briefly disoriented, chose to head back for Cortex's lair and rescue his love. In his quest, he was assisted by the witch doctor Aku Aku, and fought the islands' natives and Cortex's other mutants before reaching the villain's castle and fighting him.
Trivia[]
- Despite having his species changed mid-production, Willy/Crash's appearance in the final version of the game was mostly left the same.
- Willy the Wombat was referenced a few times in Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time, suggesting he (or a similar character) still exists in the Crash Bandicoot continuity:
- During one of the Flashback Tapes, Neo Cortex mentions that, compared to bandicoots, wombats are flagile and their bones shatter like snowglobes;
- In the Cortex Castle levels, Cortex laments not choosing a wombat as his general, to which his 1996 self retorts that wombats are weak;
- The game features unlockable skins for Crash and Coco dubbed "Willy Wombat" and "Wanda Wombat", though the former looks different from Willy's design in the development bible.
